"European Television Worries Over U.S. TV Shortfall
European television executives are fretting about the slim season in store for them from the U.S. in 2008 due to the writers strike, Daily Variety reports.
U.S. dramas are big business for European channels, and a limited season has execs looking over contingency plans, such as buying stop-gap programming from outside the United States, the newspaper reports."

Jericho: Solutions For Fans

Remember this article by Rich of Copywrite Ink? His purpose in writing this post, Rich says, is "to fast-track some solutions for Jericho fans and CBS with seven points and hopefully turn the largest show cancellation protest into the beginnings of a long-running series with more mileage than anyone imagined, fans included."

This post is as helpful now as it was last June. I especially like this one:

"Solution Four: Add Value. Being co-called “partners” with CBS is a misnomer. There is no question that the fan base, at the moment, is supporting a CBS show (or “half” show, considering CBS only bought seven episodes), but Jericho fans really need to distinguish themselves as an independent group. As such, it is your primary goal is to add value to the organization and not necessarily CBS. If fans can add value to the organization beyond the show and actually engage consumers, you have a much more marketable product for prospects, who will inevitability watch and support the show anyway. Add value and members and you’ll also get your own sponsors (there’s a nut company that might even have interest in this). CBS might even jump in too, but stress your autonomy if it does."

Go back and read it again. You might learn something new. I did. Thanks Rich.

Jericho: Rangers On Their Own

Great article from Rich of Copywrite Ink today.

"Getting Wishes: Jericho Rangers"

He also has an interesting comment:

"Its hardly a perfect solution but as a temporary answer, if fans wanted to push a campaign forward ... it would start with Jericho DVDs and iTunes episodes (the pilot, specifically) as gifts, especially tying in the idea of taking each others for granted.

The second phase of the campaign would take place sometime in the second week in Jan., which would likely be a countdown to Jericho, focusing on the divided nation concept (which is much like the producers see it).

They are two separate campaigns.

The fans would also have to pool funds and do something that attracts attention, like purchasing ads in entertainment oriented publications, etc.

It could be done, but it would have be done on fan terms because I think you are your own."

***I think we're on our own too.***

Jericho: Copywrite Ink

I would like to thank Rich at Copywrite Ink for the beautiful post he wrote yesterday.

"Most people have heard how fans banded together and convinced CBS to reverse its decision to cancel Jericho, a post nuclear terrorist attack survival drama, with 20 tons of nuts (among other things). Many know that Jericho is now set to be highlighted in 2008 as one of the few shows with any episodes for the new season.

But this story isn’t as big as all that. And perhaps for that reason, it shines twice as bright.

On Mon., Nov. 26, popular Jericho blogger and dedicated fan Jane Sweat put out a plea to fellow fans that she was desperate and needed help. Her 11-month-old retriever, Boo, had been housed at a shelter, waiting to be adopted after Sweat had moved from her home with plans to sell it.

What will they lend, share, or say? This single story of kindness seems to go a long way, at least for me. Social media can be astounding; you just need to look in the least likely but right places — like a Jericho blog where you can find the story of someone, recently displaced from her home, making the effort to save her best friend, and the fans who made it possible. Amazing."

Writing For Peanuts

Rich of Copywrite Ink says,"The writers strike could be the perfect opportunity for Jericho fans to stop taking each other out on the CBS Jericho message boards, and begin to building a fan effort in support of the writers.

Such a move would only increase the exposure of the show before it returns in January by engaging all television fans about something they are passionate about. Fan crossover is somewhat proven to work. For the most part, there has been continuing cross over between the fans of Veronica Mars, Supernatural, and Jericho."

Rich adds, "Besides, Jericho fans may even have the best message if they were so inclined. What’s that?

Stop paying writers peanuts."

"Seven steps to a TV shutdown"

The number one step?

"1. "Rally the 'Jericho' fans--they brought a show back, they can take one out."

I have to agree. Thank Rich.

JerichoMonster Fan of The Week

The Monster Fan of the Week is LisiBee.

LisiBee is a Jericho fan who has been an asset in everything Jericho related.

She Diggs, makes wonderful videos, has great ideas, and comments on Jericho articles.

She's always willing to lend a helping hand and she's a true friend to all.

We would all all be lost without her. She is a calm, rational, reasonable voice when times are chaotic, irrational, and unreasonable.

Last but not least, she is the Edna in Margie and Edna. Margie would be nothing without Edna but don't repeat that!

Congratulations and thank you for everything you do.

Here's a little something for LisiBee and other Supernatural fans.

Look here.

From Rich at Copywrite Ink:

"As Jericho fans know, the strike could return Jericho to the small screen much earlier than as a truncated midseason show in January. But as the old saying goes, be careful what you wish for.

Coming back as a Band Aid for CBS would mean limited promotion time prior to a start date (not that CBS seems like it would go gangbusters on it anyway). This also assumes Jericho fans and new viewers will be satisfied with some lower budget solutions that made it impossible to pick up where the season one cliffhanger left off. And, with only seven shows in the can, even if season two was a hit, fans would once again find themselves looking at yet another long wait between seasons."

Jericho: Call To Action

Rich at Copywrite Ink has presented an idea for Jericho Rangers to create a fan produced ad. I'm no artist but there are some out there who can do this.

It needs art. It needs be to shorted for banners. But since I will not be able to attend tonight, this is my five second solution... which I suggest runs without CBS logos as it would be fan produced.

Headline:
Divided We Fall.

Visual:
New flag opposing the American Flag. It would be great
if someone could create art similar to civil war era
stuff, except with modern arms. The two flags flying
about each side. However, the flags on their own might
work. Depends on the artist.

Body copy:
The U.S. is caught in its Second Civil War.
And Jericho, Kansas is stuck in the middle.

Call to action copy:
Own the build up in Season 1.
Stay tuned for Season 2.

Tagline:
Jericho. United We Stand.

Credit line:
Produced by Jericho Rangers.
>insert links to the various message boards.<

Run with it or dump it. The choice is yours. Have a great day ... :)

Welome To Jericho

Rich at Copywrite Ink announces his top quarterly posts:

"Every quarter, we publish a recap of our five most popular communication-related posts, based on the frequency and the immediacy of hits after they were posted. While we base this on individual posts, some are related to larger case studies."

DVD Review

"DVR Viewing Delays Clear Ratings Picture "

"The broadcast networks were in a holding pattern last week, as the hefty DVR
viewing of their premiere-week shows made it nearly impossible in the short term to determine actual viewership levels and the true success or failure of the new slates.

Making the situation more complex is the fact that Nielsen (a sister company of Adweek) is not expected to release its live-plus-three-day-commercial-ratings data—the currency in which nearly all advertisers used to get their viewership guarantees—until Oct. 15."

HeyNielsen Blog:

"Organized groups of fans are repeatedly rating a single topic or creating multiple/duplicate posts that are clearly designed to force their favorites to the top of our Rankings. (It's important to note that the Hey! Nielsen Rankings and the Hey! Nielsen Score have zero impact, influence, or connection to the Nielsen TV Ratings, even though this site is run by the same company.)"

"After alienating media buyers with its secretive run-up to Kid Nation, CBS is now openly courting Madison Avenue with an advertising jingle contest show."

Jericho: Home Run

"Not since they sold the New York Yankees to George Steinbrenner has CBS hit such a home run while swinging blindfolded. "Jericho" is a cultural phenomenon that inspires the imagination and brings tears of joy in more than a few episodes. Almost single handedly, the writers and producers of "Jericho" have restored at least a small measure of confidence in what network TV actually could be – moral, intelligent, family-oriented and visionary."

Rich of Copywrite Ink discusses HeyNielsen with comments on Jericho.

"It took less than a day for fans to see what Hey! Nielsen really is — a social network that asks “users” (a word that is well past its prime) to pile into the school gymnasium and have a shouting match. Those with the biggest lungs win. And those with the most outrageous comments get the most attention."

From The Turkish Daily News:

"Jericho: The day before tomorrow"

"The people of small town Jericho see the nuclear cloud in the horizon, and that’s how the TV series ‘Jericho’ makes its debut. Has the world come to an end? That’s for the folks of Jericho and the devoted audience to find out"

"Nielsen May Change Controversial Policy on Processing of Multiple Airings"

"Nielsen is considering changing its much-criticized new policy of allowing networks to report multiple airings of the same show - when run with the same commercial content - as a single rating, writes Broadcasting & Cable.

The reconsideration follows a firestorm of criticism when NBC decided to repeat Monday's season premiere of Heroes on Saturday and to count both shows as a single airing. By doing so, NBC benefitted not only because it gets a higher rating for a single episode, but because the move essentially eliminates a Saturday night hour that is generally one of the lowest rated hours of the week."

Jericho Comes To the UK

From Rich at Copywrite Ink:

"Sure, I think Nielsen would have been better off, years ago, partnering with cable companies and giving consumers the opportunity to opt in with the Nielsen ratings system, which would have increased the sampling size. But they didn't. And now it seems it is becoming more difficult for one of America's best known research companies to leapfrog to the next system while installing old media meters."

"I do loves me some cross-pollination on my favorite shows.

Episode 6 of Jericho’s Season 2 will be directed by Scott Peters, according to the official Jericho production blog.

Who’s he? None other than the creator of The 4400.

In other news, the Jericho crew goes through 15 to 20 pots of coffee and 25 cases of bottled water a day."

Jericho, Network Ratings, and Troops

****I have been making new posts every day around midnight and I've decided to change that. I will be posting earlier in the evening about 3-4 hours earlier than midnight. Just wanted to make you aware. This post will be dated today but is actually my Sunday blog. Thanks.****

Rich does it again:
"Paint By Numbers:Network Ratings"

"No, it’s mostly odd because the new Nielsen “everyone counts” concept doesn’t resonate with people who will watch Jericho Season 2, who once watched The Black Donnellys, or who once watched a half dozen other programs that have since been slashed for poor ratings."

Jericho article

I've been doing interviews on my other blog JerichoMonster so I was happy to see this posting today by Rich at Copywrite Ink.
It's amazing what some people will charge for giving an interview. It's equally amazing that some reporters are not always honest in their pursuit of an interview.

Jericho Tidbits

Here are a few of my other blog posts you might have missed. Hope you enjoy them.

Jericho Auction/"We Are A Nielsen Family"

Nielsen Falls Short

Rich at Copywrite Ink has "launched an unofficial Expanded Universe Short Story Competition fan fiction contest to promote Jericho for the fans, expand its universe (outside of the town where it largely takes place on television), and demonstrate the possibilities of its rich story line."

In another blog post, " Writing Fan Fiction: Richard Becker", Rich writes his own story. It can't be submitted to the contest and that's a good thing. Why? Because it is a great story. You did great, Rich.

PASS THE PEANUT PLEASE!!!!!!!

We have the opportunity to make history again...As you know we Rangers are faithful voters in TV_Vote Poll for the best shows of all time..

  • We average about 507 votes each day.
  • We currently need 1,151 votes to make make the number 1 place in the Daily Top 40 poll.
  • We will need 4,139 votes (as of today) to make it into the Top 40 shows of all time!
  • Looking at our average totals we should hold the #1 Daily Top 40 poll by this weekend, and Jericho could hold a one of the spots in the top 40 best shows of all time in less than 2 weeks.

If we start a Pass the Peanut Marathon it might not only help with the numbers, but also add a bit of fun to the whole voting process!

Expanded Universe Short Story Competition

I want to thank Rich at Copywrite Ink for his brilliant idea of having a contest to raise awareness of Jericho. Here's what the contest is about.

Expanded Universe Short Story Competition

"The Story. Write a 250- to 1,000-word short story about something happening in the expanded universe of Jericho (outside of Jericho) with original characters. While Jericho can be mentioned, please refrain from using anything that may interfere with future plot lines. Your name and address must be included on the e-mailed entry (we will publish pseudonyms upon request)."

There will be prizes for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places. Go over and see what they are. You'll like them.

*****UPDATE*****

Rich has posted his own story as an example for us. Please Digg/Comment.
